Historic Richmond Town

Historic Richmond Town (HRT): New York City's only living-historical village museum where three centuries of the American Experience can be discovered through interactive tours and relaxed exploration.

Tim Boyland's relationship with HRT is extensive and began as a child, exploring the historic buildings and natural surroundings. Recently, he served as an officer and member of the Board of Directors for Historic Richmond Town for 8 years. During that time, he served as integral member of the Buildings & Grounds and Development committees. He was chair of both the Master/Site Plan Task Force & the Strategic Planning Task Force. In 2019, Tim was co-chair and committee member of the 40th Annual Richmond County Fair, which is held on that site annually.

In seeking to improve the visitor experience, Tim (pictured below at a groundbreaking ceremony for the game-changing infrastructure project) joined a team tasked with innovating the site; devising a plan in which not only were new facilities added to the historic fabric and parking expanded, but structures for new attractions and programming were designed.  One of the key tenets of the plan is to reconnect the campus with nature.

To attract more visitors- local and tourist- an evolution needed to be sparked. Historic Richmond Town tells a multi-layered history of the site as a living, ever-changing artifact, illustrating vignettes of island life covering centuries. For a highly populated borough, a lack of retail, performance, and restaurant space was blatant; strategic planning aimed to increase revenue for the historic organization that maintains the site, as well as for invested businesses.

The campus plan is a vital one for the future of Richmond Town and its cultural initiatives. When this is combined with a new strategic plan- an integrated, coordinated, and consistent plan of action- employees, curators, neighbors, and visitors will benefit from this thoughtful and sustainable rejuvenation.
